Background
This exhibit explores the connection between the involvement of the Baltic states in the first world war and the cultural change in press reporting in Estonia. Although Estonian's didn’t directly involve themselves in the war, the allocation of resources and people was by the Russians was intense. Russia pushed a draft onto the Estonians, and many farmers were drafted for military and national guard service. Russian command also insisted on the burning of crops and resources as German forces invaded.
After the first world war, the three Baltic countries were formed due to the Baltic War of Liberation against the Russians and the Germans. For a time, this further depleted the resources of Estonia. The consecutive wars also had a profound effect on the psychological culture of Estonia.
